If you thought Keanu Reeves was having a good year this year, becoming the internet’s boyfriend in action movies and rom-coms and video games, just wait until you see what happens on May 21, 2021. After Warner Bros. updated its upcoming movie release dates, we learned that’s the day we can expect the fourth Matrix movie. But not only that, May 21, 2021 is also the release date for the fourth entry in the other epic Keanu Reeves murder saga John Wick.
Matrix 4 and John Wick 4 releasing on the same day sounds literally impossible. The combined power would actually break the universe. So what’s really going on here? The boring real answer is that one movie will inevitably move. But the fun answer is that Matrix 4 and John Wick 4 are secretly the same movie.
Think about it! Seeing as The Matrix is more reliant on digital effects that practical stunts, you’d figure it would take much longer to make. Filming is set to start next February. So perhaps Reeves finishes that first and moves onto John Wick 4 while Matrix 4 is in extensive post-production. Maybe this is also why we know so much more about Matrix 4 like returning cast members Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith, new cast members Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jessica Henwick and Neil Patrick Harris, and returning writer/director Lana Wachowski.
But imagine if it’s all just another lie from the powers that be and the real reason we know so little about John Wick 4 beyond the release date is because this Matrix sequel just is that same movie. Take the pill and realize the truth. As much as we love both franchises, there’s little real need for either of these fourth entries. Matrix Revolutions brought things back as full circle as possible. And one of the more disappointing parts of the otherwise excellent John Wick 3 was how it squandered the perfect chance to close out a sequel.
That all changes though if these filmmakers (and rival studios) are secretly making some kind of Keanu krossover. It would elevate both projects. Consider the lore possibilities! A computer simulation sure would explain the bizarre rule-set the assassin underworld operates by. Baba Yaga could absolutely be the latest incarnation of The One. Heck, rope Cyberpunk 2077 in there as the perfect midpoint between grizzled assassin Keanu and cyber Jesus Keanu. You’ve already got Laurence Fishburne! If there was any opportunity to pull off the “Phantom Pain totally isn’t Metal Gear Solid V… whoops it actually is” stunt in movies this is it.
Whatever happens, expect at least one fourth entry in a beloved Keanu Reeves movie franchise to release on May 21, 2021. Watch it be Bill and Ted 4.
