This year’s showcases of indie games on Nintendo Switch blew our minds with unexpected teams ups like an indie-developed Zelda rhythm game or straight-up Microsoft games like Cuphead and Ori and the Blind Forest coming to the rival system. The final Indie World of the year had no such megaton. However, it was a nifty reminder that the little console’s love of little games isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Arguably the two biggest announcements were sequels to two beloved indie games from the past few years. Axiom Verge is one of the finest examples of the Metroidvania subgenre, using abstract retro graphics to perfectly capture the isolating alien feel of Metroid specifically. Axiom Verge 2 will continue telling the story of this world next year. Meanwhile, if the adventure mode of Mario Tennis Aces disappointed you, Sports Story takes the comedy RPG approach to arcade golf games in Golf Story and expands it to all sorts of physical activities like tennis, baseball, and volleyball.
There’s not much else unifying the rest of the announcements, other than the fact they’re intriguing indie games!
The free multiplayer monster hunting game Dauntless makes its awaited Switch debut today, as does the previously VR first-person puzzle game The Talos Principle.
The Escapists got a jungle island monkey training survival game spin-off called The Survivalists. Street of Rage 4 and Gleamlight both look beautiful, even if one is about being stained glass and the other is about kicking ass.
SuperMash lets you cook up new video games by mixing genres while Bake ‘n Switch is a party brawler about literally playing as food. Boyfriend Dungeon is about dating the sword you use to kill monsters. Murder by Numbers is an anime Picross detective game. Sail Forth is a pirate roguelike .Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath brings the Xbox-era cult classic shooter to Switch after its announcements months ago.
And my prayers were answered because SkateBIRD, a lo-fi hip-hop skateboarding game where you play as a little bird, has been confirmed for Switch.
For more on Nintendo Switch here’s everything you need to know and here are some cool Switch games to play right now.
