New ‘BioShock’ Game Coming From New Studio

As we get ready for a new generation of video game consoles, let’s remember BioShock, one of the landmark games from the generation before this. The spiritual follow-up to the System Shock series gave us a claustrophobic underwater Objectivist city to fight through and one of gaming’s most iconic modern baddies the Big Daddies.

We got a conventional sequel with BioShock 2, but BioShock Infinite showed the franchise could be more than just the specifics of that first game. That’s why we’re pretty stoked to learn a new BioShock game is officially in the works.

Publisher 2K Games revealed that the next BioShock is being developed by a brand new studio called Cloud Chamber. They’re described as a “collective of storytellers” and include some veterans from prior BioShock games. There’s no details yet on when the game is coming or what it even is, but according to Kotaku the new BioShock has been in the works for at least two years prior to this announcement.

So what even is a BioShock sequel? Well it’s not coming from any of the teams that made BioShock before, Irrational Games or 2K Marin, since they’ve all been shut down after brutal crunch. It’s not the next Ken Levine joint, since the auteur between the original is presumably still working on this “narrative Legos” thing. And we’re pretty sure it’s not coming to PlayStation Vita.

But what I liked about BioShock Infinite was that it was a sequel more in terms of concepts instead of explicit narrative (until the end). It’s like Final Fantasy in that way. So a new BioShock just has to be a retro sci-fi shooter in a weird city dominated by ideology. There are still lots of places to go with that.
